Shockwave Therapy

An exciting and highly effective treatment option we have available at Viewbank Podiatry is EXTRACORPORAL SHOCKWAVE THERAPY (ESWT). This is indicated for the treatment of many chronic tendon and soft tissue injuries, such as Heel Pain (Plantar Fasciosis), Plantar Fasciitis and Achilles Tendinopathy.

Studies clearly indicate that shockwave therapy achieves a significant reduction in pain as well as a significant improvement in both the functionality and quality of life after the completion of the therapeutic treatment.

Radial shockwaves are high-energy acoustic soundwaves transmitted from a probe held against and passing through the skin and dissipating outwards into the underlying tissues.

Treatment produces an inflammatory response. The body responds by increasing metabolic activity around the site of pain. This stimulates and accelerates the healing process (promotes the remodelling of dysfunctional collagenous tissues, such as tendinopathies, trigger points, muscle strains, etc.)

Shockwaves break down scar tissue and/or calcification.
Transmission of pain is diminished through neurological mechanisms (inhibition of pain receptors). It often provides an immediate analgesic effect on the painful area.

The treatment sessions are 10-20 minutes in length, in which you can be given between 2,000 and 3,000 pulses.

Many patients report a significant reduction in pain after the first one to two sessions. It is common to require between 3 and 6 treatments over a 1 to 2 month period.

We only charge a regular consultation fee for this treatment.
